Courses by Alexander H. Findlay

Alexander Findlay has created an extraordinary amount of courses in his lifetime. Below is a list of the courses he has designed and many of which he built. They are organized based on Name, and State. You can edit the way they are sorted by clicking the heading of each column. This will rearrange the courses based on columns. For more information on a course if available, click the "More Info" link corresponding to the course. If you feel there is a course missing in the list, feel free to submit one by using the form at the bottom. We will review any courses submitted to ensure the most accurate list we can provide. It is of interest that many of the courses designed by Alex are now noting that credit on their web pages as well as on their golf score cards. When you think about it a course designed by Ross is very impressive, as is a Tillinghast, a Reid, or even a MacDonald. But they are just architects, albeit, very good architects. But they cannot claim the title "Father of American Golf". There are about 130 courses that can claim that distinct title of being designed by "The Father of American Golf". If yours is in that ranking why not mention it on your correspondence. Thank you.

The process of finding and authenticating golf courses designed by Alex is an ongoing thing. According to Alex's list there may well be close to 500. About 200 so far have been found. Interestingly, throughout the ages new golf course architects take an older course and do some tinkering or even a major renovation on that course and it then becomes their design. A good example of that is with the renouned golf course architect, Donald Ross. He moved to the United States in 1899, but many courses are attributed to him that have a stamp of origin earlier then 1899. Actually over 600 courses are acclaimed as a Donald Ross creation. In many cases he never set foot on the property but merely drew up a layout from his distant office. So it goes with the business of golf course architecture. Alex Findlay visited every single course that he designed, walking off each yard of the layout and in many cases actually was involved in the construction process with his youngest son, Norman, who developed a construction business for the purpose of constructing golf courses.

As I visit Alex's golf courses I learn so many valuable tidbits that I think you will find fascinating. For instance, when he was building golf courses in the Northeast he would always face the green to the south in order to get at least 6 more weeks of play in the late fall into early winter, before the greens would take a hard freeze. Did you know that not one of his greens are alike. No two fingerprints are alike, no two snowflakes are alike and no two clouds are alike. You see, every green he designed he did so by laying down on his back and looking up at the clouds. He would then sketch the clouds on his design sheets, and presto every green is a unique masterpiece. Clouds of Green! More to come.

On visiting the course on July 18, 2012 the Club manager did not know who the original designer was, but he did provide a history of the club prepared by Bob Labbance in which he outlines Alex Findlay as the "Father of American Golf" and the original designer. Much effort has been spent on endeavoring to paint Donald Ross as the architect, but there is no proof not even supported by the Donald Ross Associates. So you either have the "Father of American Golf" or the "Father of American Golf Architecture" as their founding fathers. In my estimation, it is a win, win situation.

Aronimink Golf Club

"Aronimink again was being choked by city congestion. It merged with the CC of Lansdowne and the Belmont Cricket Club, found a desirable new location in Drexel Hill (100 acres of what had been the Garrett farm) and in 1913 moved there to an 18-hole course designed by club members Cecil B. Calvert and George C. Klauder and Alexander H. Findlay, another of golf's Scottish missionaries to this country, then head of the golf department at the John Wanamaker store. By the mid-20's Aronimink once more had outgrown its facilities and in those boom times expansion naturally followed. In 1926 it sold its Drexel Hill plant for $1.2 million (now the site of Drexelbrook, sprawling apartment complex) and for $300,000 purchased 300 acres of picturesque, tumbling land in the Radnor Hunt country in Newtown Square. It commissioned Donald J. Ross, the Scottish pro-greenkeeper who had become one of America's foremost golf architects, to design the new course, with Aronimink member J. B. McGovern as associate."

Augusta Golf Club

When you visit the Augusta golf club the management would like to inform you that the course is a Donald Ross. Please keep in mind that Donald Ross did not come to this country until 1900, one year after the course was designed and built. Ross is a great golf course designer but not a miracle maker.

Galen Hall Golf Club

Galen Hall had to compete with Walter's Park and Grand View, and the owners had to add something that none of the others could offer. The original nine hole golf course was designed by a Scottish emigrant, Alex Findlay (1865-1942). Findlay was really a pioneer who helped bring the Scottish game to the attention of Americans, many of whom had never even heard of the game. Throughout his career, Findlay personally designed over one hundred golf courses in sixteen states, and played on over 2,444 courses, played exhibition matches with then renowned Henry Vardon, and left many course records in his wake. I recently played Galen Hall for the first time in my life, even though I lived only about 30 miles from the course growing up. What a course, I can only compare it with Crystal Downs in Frankfort, Michigan. It will be a most exciting round of golf on a course that is nearly 103 years old!

When you play Green Pond, take a look at the position of all the greens. Alex laid them out so that they would catch the late fall sun by facing southward. In this way he was able to get another 6 weeks of play in the fall and also to enjoy an early spring or late winter start date.

What a masterpiece! 9 holes of original early 20th century architecture. The course is being maintained by Joel and Devon who take extreme pride in their course. Oak Terrace Country Club

Originally called Oak Terrace. That course was redesigned and reopened as Talamore Country Club. Beautiful layout, but very challenging and as some who have played the old Oak Terrace and the present Tallamore layout have said as recorded in the Bible Book of Luke 5:39. You need to look it up, of course. A special thanks is due to Dr. James Hilty who has done a fantastic job of recording the history of both the old Alex course and the new course. By the way Dean Hilty is quite a good golfer.

Summit Golf Course

At one time a grand hotel supported the golf in this area. The hotel is no longer here and the golf course is still here. More rustic and blue collar, but for those who play the layout, they love it and the view is nothing to sneeze at either. If you are up this way, take a peak, don't expect Augusta or anything similar, just play a course built when there were only 44 states to the union.

Tarratine Golf Club

Originally built in 1896, but in 1913 Alex was commissioned to design a nine hole layout on one of the most beautiful islands in North America. Little wonder that the folks here don't want anyone else to learn about this sanctuary. This is Pebble Beach east, I think even more beautiful and untouched by commercialism. A bucket list MUST!

Warner Meadow Golf Club

The name of Warren Meadows in Northampton, Ma. designed in 1898 by Mr. Findlay was actually named Warner Meadows. The course was moved across the Mill Rive in 1909. The reason for moving the course was that Mr. Warner wanted to increase the rental fee of the property $250/year. The club members decided to build a course across the river but I don't know if Mr. Findlay was involved in the new design. The new course was renamed the Northampton Country Club. The membership consisted of 50 percent of Smith College women and 50 percent of local residents and prominent business people. The leading money winner on the PGA Tour in 1954, Bob Toski was a member at the club. Many PGA Professional played at the club including Gene Sarazin, Babe Zaharias, Patti Berg, Julius Boros, Doug Ford, Ted Kroll, Jim Turnesa and others as well as Bill Tilden, one of the greatest tennis players of his era. It would be a pleasure for Mr. Findlay's grandson to make a visit whenever he is in the area. Thanks for your interest. Donald O'Brien Jr.

Wilmington Municipal Golf Club

Originally built in 1900 and named the Wilmington Municipal Golf & Tennis Club. In 1937 Alex was rehired to redesign the course. It was renamed as Rock Manor. It was over 7000 yards in length, very unusual for a course from that time period. Today it is called the Rock. It was redesigned after interstate 95 robbed the course of it's length.
